Playing a song using just one string is a very good thing for the beginner guitarist and also for someone that has been playing for a while.
For the beginner
Playing a one string melodie if you are a beginner will help you a lot as you don't have to worry with your strumming hand. Since it will always be playing on the same string. Then you can concentrate only on the fretting hand.
Also, in case you can't tune the guitar yet this comes really hand, as you will only be playing one string, it really doesn't matter if the guitar is in tune or not.
For the advanced player
You can use one string melodies to practice your aural skills and navigating through the fingerboard. It's always good to play melodies on a horizontal way to practice your solo skills, such as slide.
