If there's one thing that helps me a lot while studying the guitar is getting to know the the fingerboard. This is a very important tool to play with and will help you getting your playing to the next level.

The player will have to know a bit of theory to do that, my main tip is to start with single notes and simple melody. Just play one note, the high E string open for instance, and try to find where this same note repeats on other strings. In this case the same high E on the E string open happens on the B string 5th fret, on the G string 9th fret, on the D string 14th fret and on the A string on the 19th fret. All those are the same note E, but because the strings have different gauges they make a different colour tone in each one o them even if they are exactly the same pitch. To illustrate you can think of a trombone an a double bass playing the same note, it's the same but it's also different in colour.

As an exercise you can try to do, is to play a melody you know on the first position of the neck on a different position. And the same goes with chords. An A chord that can be done in the first position can also be placed on the fifth or seventh position of the guitar.

Good luck!
